Fishing with a Crossbow: Travel Photo Contest Friday 15

Is that a fishing pole or a crossbow??? Update: The winner is Corrien! The picture is from Kochin, India and the guys are on Chinese Fishing nets that use large rock counter balances to bring up the nets. I highly recommend Kochin and southern India in general for anyone looking to get away from the crowds. It is strikingly similar to Sri Lanka.  Please check out Corrien’s great blog Reflections Enroute. Welcome to Travel Photo Contest Friday. Just in case this is your first time visiting, each week I post a beautiful picture (at least I think so) from my travels and you guess where it is. The first person to guess where this picture was taken (Country, and explanation of what that thing is and how it’s used) will win a link back to their blog with the anchor text of their choice in this post (keep it clean and relevant). Leave your Read full article…

Wild Side of Travel: animal photo tribute

Interesting characters are usually the center piece of my travels. They help make a place memorable either by their actions, personalities and generosity.  However, there is another group of actors that deserves attention, our fury and feathered friends in the animal world. They participate in festivals, live monastic lives in temples, sneak into our rooms at night, and play hide and seek while we tramp through their neighborhoods in 4-wheel drive vehicles. They have made many of my trips extraordinary and unforgettable. Here are a few faces and characters that have stayed with me long after my flight home touched down. Peacocks can’t fly well but they can at least get to the top of houses. In southern Sri Lanka this is a common sight…everyone likes a view after all. It can get really hot in Sri Lanka and everyone likes to cool down. Notice the chains around the neck. Read full article…

Calm, Stern, and Beautiful: Travel Photo Contest Friday 13

Welcome to Travel Photo Contest Friday. Just in case this is your first time visiting, each week I post a beautiful picture (at least I think so) from my travels and you guess where it is. Where do these calm, stern and beautiful statues live? Update: The winner is David! The picture was taken in a Buddhist temple in Japan on the island of Shikoku. The island is the smallest of Japan’s 4 main islands and is one of the most remote and traditional areas in Japan. Most tourist usually don’t make it down there, so if you have the chance it is a great way to jump off the normal path. Dave has decided to highlight a nonprofit called CitiNature, dedicated to green urban projects around the world. He’s just getting started, and he has a blog/website at http://www.citinature.org/ so show him some support by visiting. The first person Read full article…

Boat, Sea and Sky: Travel Photo Contest Friday 11

Update: There were some great guesses this week but alas no clear winner. I could say we are all winners for participating..blah blah blah. Thanks for all of the participation and nice comments about the photo. Sad Historical Place: Travel Photo Contest Friday 10

Update: The winner is Mike! The picture was in Cambodia at Cheung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields where the Khmer Rouge committed one of the most brutal mass killings in history. The monument and surrounding unmarked graves are a grim reminder of what man is capable of and what we are all responsible for helping to prevent. The stupa is filled with human skulls from the bottom to the top which can be seen through the glass encasement. Welcome to Travel Photo Contest Friday where each week I post a beautiful picture (at least I think so) from my travels and you guess where it is. The first person to guess where this picture was taken (Country and name of this sad historical place -somewhat of a hint) will win a link back to their blog with the anchor text of their choice in this post (keep it clean Read full article…

Mysterious Cave: Travel Photo Contest Friday 9

Update: The winner is Amy! The picture was taken just outside of Ubud, Bali at the Goa Gadja cave. Bali is such a beautiful place and everyone should leave the beaches behind for a part of their trip and explore the cool, laid back artistic atmosphere of Ubud up in the mountains. Amy does not blog but she wins eternal internet glory anyway. Road Rules: Travel Photo Contest Friday 8

Update: The winner is Claire! The picture was taken in Kosovo while driving down a normal road. The signs are left over form the heavy NATO presence in 1999. While KFOR is still here helping with policing, the tanks are now all gone. Claire blogs over at First-Time Travels. She has a great blog about traveling in the Philippines and around the area so go check her out. Two Monks: Travel Photo Contest Friday 7

Update: The winner is Dave! The picture is from Galle, Sri Lanka along the old Portuguese fort walls. Dave has decided to highlight UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. I worked with UMCOR in Sri Lanka and I can confirm that they do good work. Galle is a wonderful place to walk around and experience Sri Lanka’s colonial architecture. Interestingly enough the fort is mostly occupied by Muslims who have business ranging from antique dealers to gem and jewelry shops. Each year the city hosts a book fair  as well as the Galle Art Festival. **** Welcome to Travel Photo Contest Friday where each week I post a beautiful picture (at least I think so) from my travels and you guess where it is.
