Determine the Fate of Todd's Wanderings

Well, OK, maybe that title is a tad bit dramatic, but it is true nonetheless. Here at Todd’s Wanderings I am always trying to make the website more user friendly and to enhance your experience. I like it when you are happy, I’m also a bit anal and I need everything to look fresh and cutting edge, and of course I want my site to be more popular than twitter, I’m almost there…15 million more readers to go! Over the past few months I have been working with a designer to give my website a facelift. I have been trying to make the design and the brand as appealing as possible before I engage a coder. What I have realized is that I forgot to ask YOU what you think. Yes, I get carried away sometimes. So, I’m here to not only give you a sneak peak at what the Read full article…

A Free Lonely Planet Book Just for You

Today I’m really excited to announce the launching of my first ever book. Not only is this my first book, but it is done in partnership with Lonely Planet, it is FREE, and it features 39 other co-authors who happen to be some of the best travel bloggers around. Around the World with 40 Lonely Planet Bloggers has been my baby for the past year, from conception, to design. I was the project manager for the book and I poured a lot of blood and sweat into it over the past year. I think I also lost a little more hair as well. The ultimate aim of the book is to provide you, the reader, with a tour of not only the world, but also a vetted list of professional travel blogs to help inspire you and your next trip. The concept is simple, put 40 long term experienced travel Read full article…

Explore the World Your Way: TWs Feedback Survey and VIDEO

Hi readers, this is a different type of post. I’m not going to tell you anything, I’m actively resisting the urge to teach, amuse with my banjo twanging wit (whoops), or captivate you with my snarky satirical surprisingly smooth storytelling (damn it!). I want to know what you think! I want to know what you most enjoy about Todd’s Wanderings and what you want more of. I’m here to indulge your whims (not really), answer your questions (if I can), and leave you feeling refreshed and energetic after exploring the world. In short, I want to you to take my Todd’s Wanderings Survey to Beat all Polls (click the link or see below). Sounds exciting and contentious, doesn’t it! Help Make Todd’s Wanderings (more?) Awesome On a more serious note, this is very important. With your help I’m planning to change Todd’s Wanderings into a Purple Cow. I want to Read full article…

The Backstory behind my New Blog: Travel Blog Challenge

As some of your already know I launched a new website on Monday December 20th called Travel Blog Challenge. Before I get into the specifics you may be wondering what the hell I’m doing starting another website. Todd’s Wanderings takes up a large amount of time, I’m writing 2 books, managing a third book for Lonely Plant, and I have a small full time job with the United Nations managing a large peacebuilding project in a very sensitive area. The truth is, the Travel Blog Challenge is a way to give back to the travel blog community. As Todd’s Wanderings has picked up in popularity I have been inundated with requests for advice on how to monetize a blog, how to build more traffic, and various other how to questions that seem to think I am a crossbow hunter! While I have no idea how to fish with a crossbow Read full article…

Help one Man live his travel dream (no, not me)

How often do we get a chance to make a meaningful difference in another person’s life? How often is making meaningful difference as easy as clicking to show your support? Answer: pretty much never! But today I want to introduce you to Alex Lop, one of the semifinalists in the Paradise Hunter Contest. He’s in the running to host the new TV show and he needs our help. By voting for Alex we can ensure that: a) We change the course of one person’s life for the better (this is reason enough) b) Alex has promised to use the TV hosting duties to get involved with charities and good causes in each of the 12 places the TV show will send him (this alone is also reason enough) Two of the major themes of Todd’s Wanderings are: Do What you Love, and use your own happiness to help others. As I travel I encounter all sorts of cultural divides and misconceptions that stem from American TV. For the longest time everyone I met thought America was one big crew of either the hill living “Beverly Hills 90210″ or the beach going “Baywatch”. You can’t blame them, the export of American pop culture is all many people have to base their judgments on. But it has made my life quite maddening at times as I suffered though question after question on LA life an culture. In some ways I see my travels as a way to show others a different side of America. Well, my last ten years of work has been undone by no other than an international conspiracy by MTV and its Japanese counterpart. In March the “Jersey Shore” hit Japan and thanks to an article from March on CNN International the conspiracy has been exposed. Apparently, neither Read full article…

100 Travel Blogs and Video Vanity

Traveling, writing and blogging can be a lonely business. It can be as difficult to meet people on the road as it is knowing how many people read and enjoy what you write. Maybe this is why we as writers and travel bloggers are so obsessed with our site traffic numbers and the number of friends/fans we have on facebook (hey, please be my friend). We all go through rough patches while traveling where we miss home and family, just as we go through bouts of self-doubt wondering if what we write is worth anything to anyone. Like anything in life, when you face a period of depression, self-doubt, adversity, whatever, you have two choices: wallow in it all and remain in the same place, or continue walking and see what’s around the next corner. Every corner for me has always offered a solution to my problem now out of Read full article…

Change and Risk Report #1

If you’ve been following Todd’s Wanderings I hope you’ve picked up on a major theme of the blog and my life: Change and Risk. As I look back on the first half of 2010 I’m happy to report that life has been filled with both. I’m not able to capture everything in my blog posts so the CR reports (yeah, I just created an acronym on my site) are my way of laying out my life in a somewhat coherent manner. If I find more time I will try to do them more often or even create a monthly newsletter. But for now, be happy with what you get Don’t be the Sheep! Make your own way. Please stop biting my pants. The past six months have been incredibly busy for me and Todd’s Wanderings. Not only did I switch to a new web address and self-hosted site (after blogging Read full article…

I’m not the type of person who can  separate life, travel and work. I’ve tried hard to fit in with the rest of the US and settle down. No one tells you specifically that you need to separate them but somehow there’s a constant pressure from society, friends, and family to do so.  Work is what you do to sustain your life and fund your temporary escape by traveling. Your not supposed to enjoy work, although everyone agrees there are a few rare individuals that do. But they also agree that you are not destined to be one of them. If you try to make a life out of travel, you are seen as escaping your “real” life and not working hard enough. I meet people everyday who work with me in the development world who say: “Someday I’ll have to go back to the real world and settle down.” Read full article…
